2024 Australian Trauma Informed Cancer Conference
Brought to you by Calvary Mater Newcastle
Fri 18 October 2024
Mater Lecture Theatre, Newcastle, NSW, Australia
In Australia, conversations have been occurring for many years about how to provide Trauma Informed Care in mental health service, in maternity services, in paediatric care, and in drug and alcohol services. In services outside health, strategies have been implemented to provide Trauma Informed Care in the context of schools, in jails, and in the courts. Now it’s time to consider cancer care. We have some evidence that people who were affected by psychological trauma before cancer diagnosis have higher rates of suboptimal outcomes from cancer care. We also have evidence that some aspects of cancer treatment can be psychologically traumatising for people. What does this mean for how we deliver cancer care in Australia? How do people with psychological trauma experience cancer care differently? How can we improve the care we offer so that the most vulnerable people in our community get at least as much benefit from our cancer care as everyone else? And what are the risks to people in our care and to our healthcare providers if we don‘t get this right?
Join us for a thought provoking and invigorating day of keynote speakers, case discussion and collaborative strategising. We are thrilled to announce the following keynotes:
Culturally Safe Practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Cancer Care with Ms Amy Fletcher, Team Lead for Gurayi Biyn Yadha / ITC and Cancer Navigator Programs at Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Services Wyong;
